Nutfield Youth 1 Purley Panthers 2 Tandride Shield Final Sunday 9th May 2004

Nutfield Youth U9’s suffered the worst start imaginable in their League Shield Cup Final against Purley Panthers when Panthers scored with their first attack of the game before goalkeeper Reg Wantling had touched the ball.   Nutfield looked shaky for the next few minutes before Ben Gubby settled the team with a surging run from midfield. Striker Luke Bellars was finding it hard against the well-organised Panthers defence and Nutfields two best chances fell to Sam Ford when on both attempts he went close after swooping in from the right.   The defence of Samuel Belcher and Scott Southby were dealing admirably with any Panthers attack until seconds from the end of the half, against the run of play, a free kick swung in from wide on the left hit the crossbar and the rebound was bundled over the line to leave Nutfield 2-0 behind at the break. Nutfield started the 2nd half on the attack and came close on a number of occasions.  The most likely route to goal seemed to be coming from a string of Ben Davies corners that were making it very difficult for the Panthers defence.   From one of these a Ford header shaved the outside of a post, and another a Gubby header was just scrambled away.   Lad of the match the Panthers goalkeeper superbly saved another Gubby header and a Davies long shot, which both seemed goal bound.  Davies then thumped a shot against a post before Gubby finally scrambled home yet another corner. Despite not being at their best Nutfield had a succession of further corners and made desperate attempts in the last 10 minutes to find the goal to take the game into extra time.  They were grateful for a goal line clearance from Ford when replacement goalkeeper Adam El-Hariri was nearly beaten on a solitary break away attack. Even with the loss of this game the U9’s were not dispirited and now look forward to next year after what, for them, has been a tremendous season.

Junior Sports 'C'Nutfield Youth 7     18th April 04

Nutfield Youth U9 went into their last league match of the season needing a point to ensure they were Tandridge League South U9 champions and emphatically ran out 7-0 victors at Junior Sports C.   Any early nerves were soon calmed when top scorer Ben Davies added 2 more to his seasons tally when he was on hand to tap in striker Luke Bellars cross and responded quickest when a Ben Gubby shot came back off a post. The midfield of Gubby, Davies and Sam Ford then took complete control of the game.   Gubby added a third when he fired home from the edge of the area and Samuel Belcher added the fourth when his fierce long shot slithered past the goalkeeper.   The defence of Belcher and Adam El-Hariri admirably dealt with whatever threat Junior Sports were able to mount. Nutfield continued their total domination in the 2nd half only allowing their goalkeeper Reg Wantling a solitary touch.   Three further goals were scored with them all resulting from perfectly placed Bellars corners.  The first, when a corner that was goal bound was glanced into the net by a defender, the second when Gubby was perfectly positioned to spin and fire home and the third a header superbly flicked into the top corner by Ford.

Having secured the League Nutfield now look forward to their final game of the season in the League Shield cup final versus Purley Panthers.

Nutfield Youth 5 Redhill A 2    4th April 04

After a thoroughly absorbing and competitive match Nutfield Youth U9 eventually ran out 5-2 winners over Redhill A.   In a very even first half the deadlock was eventually broken when Ben Davies scrambled the ball home after fine interplay between Sam Ford and Luke Bellars.   A second soon followed when Ben Gubby cutting in from just outside the area found the bottom corner.   The game could have been made safe but having been brought down in the area Davies then scuffed his penalty shot wide

Early in the second half with the wind at their back Redhill came marauding forward and deservedly levelled the game at 2-2.   Samuel Belcher and Scott Southby were finding it hard to contain the Redhill attack and they scored first with an unstoppable fierce long shot and then an unfortunate own goal from a corner kick.  In fact had in not been for a very brave save from goalkeeper Reg Wantling Redhill would have gone 3-2 in front.

With their championship aspirations slipping away Nutfield were stung into action and firstly Luke Bellars struck after shrugging off two defenders before crisply slotting home.   Davies then struck twice, finding himself in the right place in front of goal to tap in a Ford cross and then to complete his hat trick wonderfully flicking up and volleying home another Ford cross.

Redhill A 0 Nutfield Youth 3     21st March 04

Nutfield Youth U9 produced a nervy performance before eventually running out 3-0 winners away at Redhill A.  Against a very competitive Redhill team Nutfield found it a real struggle to get going and even with having most of the play it was well into the first half before they opened the scoring.   Despite some good work from Sam Ford and Ben Gubby they were finding it very difficult to deliver the final ball but eventually one did come when Luke Bellars found himself free and made no mistake with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Early in the second half Nutfield went further ahead when Gubby, surging forward from midfield, struck a long shot firmly into the bottom corner of the net.  With the wind against them, an unwell Ben Davies and an hobbling Samuel Belcher, Nutfield’s defence was heavily reliant on Scott Southby who fortunately chose this match to have one of his best games of the season.  The dominance of Southby ensured that goalkeeper Adam El-Hariri had a comfortable first appearance in goal performing proficiently whenever called upon.  With Ford and Gubby ultimately taking control in midfield Bellars deservedly made the game safe when from his corner Ford played the ball back to him and from just outside the area he curled the ball into the far top corner.

Tonbridge Angels 0 Nutfield Youth 4     14th March 04

Nutfield Youth U9 came through a difficult away fixture at Tonbridge Angels with another convincing 4-0 win.   On a very windy Sunday, Nutfield started with the wind at their backs and after 10 minutes of nervous action finally opened the scoring when Ben Davies swooped to volley home when a Ben Gubby shot was only half cleared.   With Sam Ford and Luke Bellars combining well on the right and Gubby beginning to gain the upper hand in midfield Nutfield got the comfort of a 2-0 halftime lead when Gubby met a Bellars corner on the half volley to find the roof of the net.

With the wind in their faces Nutfield continue with attack being the best form of defence and whenever they were threatened Samuel Belcher and Scott Southby, with help from Davies and Gubby kept Angels down to one serious shot for goalkeeper which Reg Wantling had to save.   With Gubby regularly supplying Bellars and Ford who continued to reek havoc on the right hand side it was no surprise when Belcher hovering just outside the area spectacularly blasted a weak clearance from a corner straight back into the top corner of the net.  Bellars completed the scoring with a smartly taken strike after picking up a loose ball midway in the Angels half, he beat two defenders before placing the ball past the keeper.

Chistlehurst 0  Nutfield Youth 9    7th March 04

Nutfield Youth U9 continued their quest for championship honours with an emphatic 9-0 win at Chiselhurst Wanderers B.  Hard working front man Luke Bellars opened the scoring from a Sam Ford cross which was shortly followed by a fierce Ben Gubby long shot.   With Ford and Gubby taking control in midfield and solid defence from Samuel Belcher and Adam El-Hariri, Ben Davies added a third just before half time.

In the second half Nutfield took the opportunity to change the team around but this made no difference to the end result with a further six goals.   Despite a succession of fantastic saves by the outstanding Chiselhurst goalkeeper, keeping some respectability to the score, Ford working tirelessly in midfield and Davies sending in a string of right wing crosses, goals were inevitable.

Firstly Bellars pounced to score his second and Belcher slotted home in his first attack.   Starting from well inside his own half Gubby scored a outstanding solo goal.   This was followed an unfortunate own goal, a Davies net buster and a Bellars third which deservedly completed his hat-trick with the last kick of the match.   Goalkeeper Reg Wantling had an easy match with his closest scare coming off a rebound from his own player from a Chiselhurst corner.

Nutfield Youth 2 Universal 0   (League Shield Semi Final)    29th February 04

Nutfield Youth U9’s reached the final of the League Shield after a awesome team performance saw them defeat Universal 2-0 in the semi-final. A hard fought and very entertaining game was never really settled until the final whistle.  The first half was very even and either side could have scored first with the Nutfield defence of Samuel Belcher, Ben Gubby, Sam Ford and Scott Southby finding it particularly demanding to combat the close ball skills of the Universal team.  Nutfield teamwork did eventually tell and striker Luke Bellars pounced following a good run and cross from Ford.   Nutfield could well have gone in further ahead at the break had a Ben Davies shot not cannoned back of a post.

A very tense start to the second saw chances at both ends with Bellars coming closest for Nutfield with a header and then Universal hitting a post, before midway through the half Davies poked home the second after a goalmouth scramble.   As Universal came looking for the goal to get them back into the game outstanding Nutfield teamwork held them at bay and they could even have sewn up the match when a Davies shot thumped against the Universal bar.  Nutfield managed to keep a clean sheet thanks to a terrific late save by goalkeeper Reg Wantling following a Universal corner.

Nutfield Youth 5  Orpington Colts 1    22nd February 04

Another Ben Davies hat trick was the highlight of a thrilling top of the table clash between Nutfield Youth and Orpington Colts.  Despite kicking with the wind Nutfield started slowly and soon found themselves behind to an early Orpington goal.   At this stage Orpington were on top and Nutfield owed much to the defensive play of Samuel Belcher, Adam El-Hariri, Ben Gubby and goalkeeper Reg Wantling for still being in the game.   Finally Nutfield got going and Luke Bellars came closest to scoring when put through by Sam Ford before a superb ten minute spell, either side of half time, saw lad of the match Davies score three times.

The first goal, which sent Nutfield in level at the break, came just before half-time when Davies met a Luke Bellars corner on the half volley.  The second followed a dazzling solo run down the left wing before he cut inside to slot a shot into the bottom corner and the third as he again cut in from the left playing a quick one two with Bellars before firing home on his weaker left foot.

Nutfield were now in full flow and Gubby added two more, to seal a fine team performance and an emphatic  five one win, firstly scrambling in from close range after good work on the right from Ford and then meeting a Bellars corner on the volley to thump home from six metres.

Nutfield Youth 4  Palace Guard 1  ( League Shield Quarter Finals)   15th February 04

On Sunday Nutfield Youth faced a tough League Shield quarter-final cup game against high riding Palace Guard.  In this hard fought and entertaining match Palace came close to scoring first when a curling shot from the edge of the area was superbly pushed around the post by goalkeeper Reg Wantling.   Nutfield did eventually open the scoring when Luke Bellars fired home after excellent work from Sam Ford and Ben Davies and a second soon followed when a fierce long-range shot from Ben Gubby flew straight into the top corner.  Palace clawed their way back when a mix up in the Nutfield defence resulted in a close range tap in.  The perfect finish to the half came, when with seconds to go Ford expertly placed a shot into the corner of the goal to leave Nutfield three one up at the interval.

In the second half Gubby, Davies and Ford took complete control in the middle of the park and the well organised and disciplined Nutfield team never looked like surrendering their lead.  Most of the play was kept in the Palace half and whenever Nutfield was threatened the cultured defending of Samuel Belcher aided by Scott Southby ensured it was never a serious threat.  Ford made the game safe when late in the half he scored following a swift break away.   The exhilarating team performance left Nutfield looking forward to their semi-final opponents.

Nutfield Youth 17 (Seventeen) Westerham 0               1st  February  04

After Nutfield's hard fought draw last week this week’s clash with bottom of the table Westerham served up a goal feast.   A fine performance from the whole team resulted in nine first half goals with goals from Ben Davies, Ben Gubby, Sam Ford, Sam Belcher and Luke Bellars.   Gubby again lead the frontline with commanding assurance and with Davies having one of his off days particularly impressive were the other outstanding midfield performances of Bellars and Ford.   These combined with the defensive display of new pairing of Belcher and Adam El-Hariri denied goalkeeper Reg Wantling a single touch in the first half.

Little changed in the second half as a changed around Nutfield team continued to push relentlessly forward.   Goals were scored by all the outfield players with a further eight with  contributions from Ford, Davies, El-Hariri, Belcher and three from substitute Scott Southby.   The highlight of the second half was when goalkeeper Reg Wantling came rushing up field to take a penalty, awarded for a trip in the area, only to see his perfectly struck left foot shot thump against a post.

Whyteleafe 3 Nutfield Youth 3          25th January 04

On a bright winters morning large crowd watched the top of the table clash between Whyteleafe and Nutfield Youth.   Nutfield had the perfect start when Ben Davies scored from close range after Ben Gubby flicked on a Sam Ford cross.  The jubilation was short lived as Whyteleafe soon equalized when Reg Wantling just failed to keep out a fierce cross shot.  Gubby then fired Nutfield back in front following good work by Luke Bellars.  Man of the match Wantling then produced a string of dazzling saves to keep Nutfield in front, the best of these from a powerfully struck long shot that he tipped acrobatically onto the crossbar.

The second half proved an uphill battle for Nutfield this despite Ford scrambling home Nutfield’s third.  All hands to the pumps in the Nutfield defence, with Samuel Belcher in command, and further superb saves by Wantling, kept Whyteleafe out until the final ten minutes.   Then they scored twice, once when a corner was scrambled home and then again following a smart move down their right flank. After a thoroughly entertaining game it seemed that for the last five minutes both teams were happy to settle for the well earned draw.

Nutfield Youth 13 (thirteen) Tonbridge Angels 0   11th January 04

On a sunny morning and a heavy pitch, Nutfield produced their most emphatic football display of the season.  With a splendid array of fast moving, forward flowing, passing movements they were unstoppable.   The game started perfectly with Ben Gubby slotting home a Ben Davies cross barely 10 seconds into the match.   From then on despite brave efforts from Tonbridge it was almost constant one-way traffic.   Nutfield finished the first half seven nil up with two further goals from Gubby, one being a thumping header from a Sam Ford cross.   Two goals from Davies, one from Ford and a magical solo effort from Luke Bellars, when he started from the half way line and dribbled past five opponents before beating the keeper, completed the scoring.

The second half continued in the same vain with two further goals from Ford, one beautifully stroked in from the right hand side of the box, two from Gubby and a sweetly caressed left foot volley by Davies from a Ford cross.   Substitute Adam El-Hariri came of the bench to score on his first appearance. Despite the constant attacking the rock solid defence of Samuel Belcher, Scott Southby and goalkeeper Reg Wantling were there whenever Tonbridge threatened.

Netherne Panthers 1 Nutfield Youth 3       4th January 04

A hard fought and very entertaining game greeted Nutfield Youth when they started the New Year with a match away at Netherne.  On a large pitch the first half was very even, with the midfield of Luke Bellars, Sam Ford and Ben Davies finding it difficult to create any clear chances for Ben Gubby.   Both keepers had few direct shots and Ford came nearest to scoring when sent clear on the right but just failed to hit the target.   After some anxious moments in the early stages Samuel Belcher settled the whole team with an assured defensive display.

Early in the second half the deadlock was finally broken when a Davies corner from the left swung directly into the Netherne net.  Gubby then scored their second when he crashed in a close range shot after good work from Ford following another Davies corner.   Gubby then added a third with a neat finish after an exhilarating passing movement on the right between Bellars and Ford.   The game was brought back to life when a mix-up in the Nutfield defence resulted in a well-taken Netherne goal.  From then on the rock solid defence of Belcher, Scott Southby and goalkeeper Reg Wantling with assistance from the midfield players ensured that Nutfield ran out comfortable winners.

Nutfield Youth 4  Netherne Panthers 0      14th December 03

Nutfield Youth maintained their excellent run of form with a hard fought out victory in their Round 2 League Shield cup game against Netherne Panthers.   Having had a close game in their earlier league match Nutfield took nothing for granted and completely dominated the first quarter of the game with the midfield of Ben Davies, Luke Bellars, Sam Ford and Samuel Belcher in total control.   During this period Nutfield scored twice through Ben Gubby, playing his second full game up front, following pin point passes from Davies and Bellars.  Nutfield scored a superb third when Ford magnificently headed in a perfectly placed Davies corner.   The rock solid defence of Belcher and Scott Southby ensured Nutfield went in comfortably in front at half time.

The second half proved very tough for both sides with ball control becoming difficult on the heavy pitch but despite this exciting football was played by both teams.   There were chances at both ends with fine saves being made by Reg Wantling for Nutfield and the Netherne goalkeeper.   Netherne made desperate attempts to get back into the match but these were finally extinguished when Gubby was put through by Ford to complete his hat-trick and score Nutfield's forth.

Nutfield Youth 7   Junior Sports C 2   7th December 03

On a crispy sunny morning Nutfield produced a fine display to match the weather.   The game was effectively sealed in the first half with Nutfield scoring five goals.   The first came from Sam Ford with a deft touch following a corner.   The next two from Ben Gubby, the first a superb net buster from the edge of the area, the second a poke in after good work from the midfield trio of Ben Davies, Ford and Luke Bellars.   Davies was again in the right place at the right time to keep up his goal a game record and Bellars playing in midfield was on hand to poach the fifth with a neat finish from a corner.   The usual back pairing of Samuel Belcher and Scott Southby, along with Reg Wantling in goal looking as rock solid as ever.

The second half was far more even with Junior Sports taking control in the third quarter and scoring twice through two excellently worked goals, the second leaving the Nutfield defence confused as to where their own goal was.   This rocked Nutfield into their senses and they dominated the final quarter to score twice.    One from Davies having perfectly placed his long shot from wide on the right into the top corner and then Ford smashing in an unstoppable fierce shot from the edge of the area.

Chiselhurst Wanderers B  0   Nutfield Youth  6      30th November 03

After a three weeks absence Nutfield Youth returned to football with a round 1 League Shield cup game against Chiselhurst Wanderers B.    Nutfield dominated for almost the whole game playing some exhilarating passing football.    After 15 minutes of constant pressure Nutfield finally went in front when Ben Davies was there to nudge home from close range after good work from Sam Ford and Luke Bellars.   Bellars scored the second after Davies and Ford returned the compliment.  Solid defence by Scott Southby and Ben Gubby ensured goalkeeper Samuel Belcher had only one touch in the first half when he was allowed the luxury of a goal kick.

Nutfield continued in the same vein in the second half with two further goals from Davies to complete his hat trick, one following a fine individual run on the left.   Ford also netted with a perfectly placed left foot shot after fine interplay between Davies and now outfield player Belcher.   Southby having his best game of the season ensured Chiselhurst only had one serious shot in this period.   Gubby pushed up field for the last few minutes of the match completed a fine game for him with a thunderous shot to score Nutfield’s sixth.

Nutfield Youth  9   Chiselhurst Wanderers B  0    2nd November 03

Nutfield continued their recent run of good form with a demolition job on Chiselhurst Wanderers B.   The fine defensive pairing of Ben Gubby,  Samuel Belcher and Luke Bellars excelling in his new midfield role, ensured it was almost all one-way traffic with goalkeeper Reg Wantling having a very relaxing game.   Three first half goals were scored from long range shots with Samuel Belcher scoring twice, once directly from a free kick, and Luke Bellars once.   Sam Ford and Scott Southby also came close and further goals would have been forthcoming except for the fantastic form of the Chiselhurst goalkeeper who made a number of breathtaking saves.

Nutfield continued their fine form in the second half and Sam Ford’s tireless efforts over the last few weeks were finally rewarded with a hat trick, one of which was masterfully flicked in from a Luke Bellars corner.   Ben Davies, who seemed to have been asleep through most of the first half finally woke up and continued his goal a game record with three in the second.   Scott Southby playing up front for the first time could not find the net himself but did contribute to a number of the goals.

Orpington Colts 1   Nutfield Under  3     26th October 03

A top of the table clash saw a goalless 1st half which was a very even game with both teams having scoring chances.   Excellent passing football was played by both with Nutfield coming closest to scoring when Ben Davies thumped a shot against the post following a fine passing movement between Sam Ford and Luke Bellars.

Nutfield continued to play their best football of this season and struck twice early in the 2nd half with first Giles Lloyd, scoring his first goal of the season, scrambling home a close range effort and then Ben Davies driving home after a quick break.   The goals stunned Orpington into action and but for some great defending by Samuel Belcher and Ben Gubby they would have got back into the game earlier.   Nutfield had a couple of chances to kill the game, but could not beat the excellent Orpington keeper before Orpington finally pulled one back with 10 minutes to go.   Nutfield came under more sustained pressure but if it had again not been for the excellence of the Orpington keeper would have scored on a couple of breakaways before Ben Davies, with a late goal, sealed the win with a fine shot from the edge of the area.

Redhill 'A' 1  Nutfield Youth  2    18th October 03  (Friendly)

After their 10-0 routing of Westerham last weekend, Nutfield U9’s continued their success but with a far harder battle against Redhill only overcoming their opponents in the dieing seconds of the game. The first half saw an end-to-end game with both teams breaking fast only to miss in front of goal.  Nutfield eventually opened the score when Ben Davies finished yet another goalmouth scramble by scoring from short range.  Redhill responded almost immediately and were able to draw the scores level after a powerful shot eventually beat the Nutfield Keeper, Reg Wantling, despite initially having parried the effort. Both teams tightened their play during the second half with defences and midfields of both teams denying their opponent chances. Just as the crowd thought a draw was certain, Sam Ford, the Nutfield striker who had dropped to help defend won the ball, made a run and slotted a pass through to his striking partner, Luke Bellars, who finished clinically by placing the ball past the keeper. Ford was awarded man of the match.

Nutfield Youth 7 Redhill B 1   17th October 03

Nutfield produced another fine display to overcome Redhill B.   As far as the scoring went the first half was a bit of a one-man show with Ben Davies scoring all 4 goals.   This could not have been further from the truth with all the goals being scored after fine teamwork between all the Nutfield players.   Redhill B did momentarily come back into the game when a fierce struck free kick pierced the apparently impenetrable Nutfield defence to make the score 2-1.  The Nutfield goalkeeper Reg Wantling did keep them in the game with a fine save seconds later.  Particularly impressive were Giles Lloyd in midfield, and Luke Bellars with his fine link passing with the other front players.

The 2nd half was all Nutfield with 3 further goals being added, the first being a firmly struck long shot from Ben Davies, the second a dazzling solo run from Samuel Belcher and the third a penalty.  Sam Ford worked tirelessly on the right hand side, but it was just not going to be his day but he did finally get some reward when he outran the defender to be brought down in the area and Luke Bellars superbly converted the penalty.

Westerham 0 Nutfield Youth 10 (ten)  12th October 03

Nutfield dominated the whole of this game with 95% of the play taking place in the Westerham half.   Nutfield were soon in front with the first three goals being scored by Luke Bellars.   The first was a speculative shot that the goalkeeper let go under his body, the second was good shot following a defensive mix-up and the third was a close range tap in. Samuel Belcher then scored with good long range shot  from the right hand side of the area after a super solo run. Ben Davies then scored with a even closet tap in from a Luke Bellars pass. Final goal of the half was a own goal from another Luke Bellars cross.

For the 2nd half Nutfield changed their team around. Sam Ford scored early in the half following a passing movement from Luke Bellars, Ben Davies and Samuel Belcher. Sam Ford then scored a superb second after a move involving Luke Bellars, Samuel Belcher and then a fine cross by Ben Davies from wide on the right.   Unfortunately Samuel Belcher had been fouled and injured and the Referee blew to stop play just before Sam scored. Ben Davies scored two further goals with fiercely struck cross shots from the edge of the area and Luke Bellars added his fourth. The defence of Scott Southby, Giles Lloyd and Reg Wantling remained sound throughout the game.
